Our version of "On Golden Pond" is Jerry Pond
With all the cutbacks, we still have a nice little treasure pretty much in the center of town called Jerry Pond. Here are some snapshots from our visit yesterday.
And on the human side, it's hard for many people to appreciate how cold the water is in Northern Maine, especially this year but.......oh, to be young again! (Quality isn't very good)

Penobscot River Flood of 2011
This will give you some idea of what I mean when I say "the mighty Penobscot River"
See the following pictures and more in a slide show here:
One Ride Home shown on Slidely
These were taken at Harrington Lake and "on the way home" couldn't pass the cribworks on the West Branch of the Penobscot River without stopping. The river never lets me down! She always shows me "a different set of clothes" and what mood she's in today! Any of these can be made into a greeting card made with archival quality paper suitable for framing or photos matted or unmatted from 4x6 to 8x10 sizes for photo only, or matted 5x7 to 11x14.

Recalls of Aflatoxin-Contaminated Dog Food Have Begun
If you feed dry dog food to your pet, please read this article by Dr. Becker, a veterinarian, who repeats her recommendations to transition to another type of diet and avoid any pet food containing corn o corn products. After studying many labels here locally, it's almost impossible to find any dry food for dogs or cats not only without corn as the first ingredient, let alone any corn.
I had a dog and a cat who were having pretty severe health problems and both improved almost over night when I stopped dry food. If you search Dr. Becker's site you will also find other articles on the subject.

Excessive Feeding of Birds & Wildlife
It's a very windy day today & spores from dried droppings accumulated from drawing large numbers of birds and animals can cause problems to the animals and to humans. Pigeons in particular can cause serious health risks from disease organisms that can grow in the nutrient-rich accumulations of bird droppings, feathers and debris.
histoplasmosis can affect both humans and animals and is transmitted by airborne spores from soil contaminated by pigeons' droppings as well as droppings from other birds. Usually, the enrichment of the soil by the birds' droppings for two years or more allow the disease to reach significant levels of development
Similarly, the Cryptococcus is found in the accumulations of pigeon droppings around nesting sites like attics, cupolas, ledges and water towers.

If you're having problems in your area, check out my petition of a sample ordinance that may help:

Stop Excessive Wildlife Feeding
While many people mistakenly think they are helping animals, feeding them, especially excessively, causes a multitude of problems for the animals and for humans. In the process of researching this I found a web site called PAWS. Please take the time to check into the issues at their site, http://www.paws.org/feeding-wildlife.html. Also be sure to read their "About" page.
Please sign my petition to encourage our Town Council to adopt an Ordinance and maybe even duplicate this for your town, here:
As PAWS describes so well: " We are the kind of people who delight in the company of an animal friend, who are awed by a majestic eagle in flight. Like you, we understand that animals enrich our lives. We also know they cannot speak for themselves and need protection. That is why PAWS brings together people like you to ensure animals are respected, safe and have a voice."
Please sign my petition to encourage our Town Council to adopt an Ordinance and maybe even duplicate this for your town, here:
